Science makes it clear that human life begins at conception. At the moment of fertilization, the embryo becomes a genetically distinct human being. But these precious members of our human family have no legal protection. They do not share in the same rights as the rest of their human brothers and sisters. In South Carolina, and in the rest of the United States, it is perfectly legal to kill these little humans. 

The Personhood Act of South Carolina (S.217) is seeking to grant legal protection to these preborn children. The Personhood Act will bring our law into alignment with the evidence.

South Carolina once spilled blood in order to protect the institution of slavery: an institution that dehumanized people for profit, based solely on their morally inconsequential physical differences. We now have the opportunity to stand up against another institution that dehumanizes people for profit, for the same reasons. South Carolina could be the very first state in the union to grant full legal protection to these preborn members of the human family.
