#AllOutMay1 South Carolina Public Education Support
The Issue
A Call to Action created by Michael R. Burgess on behalf of SC for Ed
Resolved. To establish May 1st, 2019 as a day of reflection and renewal on the question of education reform through direct action taken by the teachers of South Carolina.
Whereas Base Student Cost has not been fully funded in 11 years as required by state law and is not fully funded in either the proposed House or Senate budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year.
Whereas the 10 % pay raise agreed upon by the three major teacher representative entities was thusly ignored and discarded in favor of a lesser raise that does not meet the minimal goal of increasing the average teacher salary in South Carolina to the Southeast average.
Whereas the South Carolina Legislature has refused to remove the proviso waiving class size ratios even though the financial exigency for said waiver has passed and no formal study has been conducted to determine what school districts can and cannot afford in terms of classroom staffing.
Whereas the South Carolina Legislature has failed to pass any significant or substantial legislation, such as the Teacher Bill of Rights, to address the insufferable and oppressive working conditions endured with great forbearance by a large number of our public school teachers in South Carolina.
Whereas the efforts made by public school teachers, at every stage of this legislative session, to call for redress of our grievances have fallen on deaf ears as witnessed by a lack of good faith action on the matters public school teachers have petitioned for redress throughout this session.
We, the public school teachers of South Carolina, do ordain and declare May 1st, 2019 to be a day of reflection and renewal through direct action that demonstrates our commitment to immediate common sense public education reform from the South Carolina Legislature before Sine Die on May 9th, 2019.
