Funding for an Outer Southern Domestic Violence Service Hub

Funding for an Outer Southern Domestic Violence Service Hub

The issue

The two most recent state budgets had no funds allocated for domestic violence prevention.

Too many women in our southern community experience, or are at risk of experiencing domestic abuse. In 2014 Southern Women's Health was closed, leaving the south with no women's health service to support women experiencing domestic abuse and with no capacity for prevention and recovery programs. The redirection of GP Plus allied Health counsellors and social workers from a community model to a medical model has delivered a further lack of services and support for women experiencing domestic violence.

SHine SA Noarlunga has also closed in 2019 as has Noarlunga Health Service.

The lack of access to appropriate secondary prevention and trauma recovery services to support women's recovery and to prevent domestic abuse, presents a risk of increasing numbers of women falling into the acute crisis category and increased pressure on already stretched services.

We request that Government commit to ongoing funding for an Outer Southern Domestic Violence Service Hub, which provides immediate and secondary prevention services, including education, counselling, trauma therapy, referral and support services.

A funded southern hub must be established to provide an informed first point of contact and to continue sustained support through the women's journey to safety and recovery.
