Mahatma Gandhi said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated"
The First Fruits Festival, which occurs annually in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, on the first Saturday in December, is a Zulu cultural event intended to celebrate the coming-of-age of Zulu warriors. The young warriors—teenage boys as young as 14 years old—are tasked to kill a bull with their bare hands to prove their courage.
To torture, mutilate and cause suffering of these bulls to prove that a child has come of age or is now a warrior is the most cowardice act of any human being. And to deliberately teach children to be barbaric and inhumane is raising a generation that walks in heartlessness and brutality. The Bull in these rituals is being tortured and killed in a heinous act of violence. These bulls do not deserve this cruelty inflicted on them because of a belief. What happened to compassion being taught to our children? Brutalizing these bulls does not make one older or wiser. It only displays disturbing behavior that leaves a bull tormented and senselessly killed. Our roles as human beings has nothing to do with inflicting pain on these bulls; it is in learning to live on this earth in harmony with all living creatures and to walk as caretakers for all animals. We, the voice for all animals in this world are asking you to take a compassionate stand against this barbaric and inhumane act of abuse. We ask that you would stand brave and compassionate in the face of change for these bulls and show the people what a true hero walks like. Please change the focus of these rituals from one of destruction to a positive where children learn to use their hearts as compassionate warriors and who make this world a better place. Please stop this horrible ritual of abuse.
