As you know London's beautiful South Bank is threatened by over- development in the South Bank conservation area. It continues to draw controversy in the local and national press. 'The Slab' has been coined by Simon Jenkins in The Guardian who highlighted the negative impacts that the proposed buildings would have on the surrounding heritage assets and neighbouring residents. There is a growing focus on the environmental harm that this development will cause.
The State of London Debate 2022 took place on Tuesday 28 June where Londoners asked the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and Deputy Mayors in-person or online, about issues that matter - from cycling to jobs, the environment to housing, hosted by LBC's James O'Brien.
Despite six members of the #SOS: Save Our South Bank action group attending in person and many more viewing online, neither the local people in the hall or those viewing online were successful in getting their question asked of the Mayor and Deputies.
There is an opportunity for you to send in the following question we wanted to ask Sadiq Khan:
- Question: We're in the midst of a climate crisis, have some of the worst air quality, and a chronic housing shortage. Where do you stand on the proposals for the South Bank at 72 Upper Ground – yet another massive office block on the river, blighting the heritage skyline, robbing social housing residents of daylight, and releasing 100,000+ tons of carbon for speculative development?
Please send your question to: mayor@london.gov.uk
Do let us know if you get a response (or not) by dropping us an email to: 72upperground@coinstreet.org
As Lambeth Council prepare the documentation required to refer the Planning Application to the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority's planning team, the local community is waiting for the GLA to consider the application and make a 'Stage 2' report they continue to push for the Mayor to 'call in' the application now.
Please do ask the question and help us to keep up the momentum on this campaign to Save Our South Bank.
Thank you
