SOS Save Our Service - Arranmore Fire Service
The Issue
Arranmore Island deserves the same protection as every other community in Ireland.
Our firefighters complete the same training, face the same risks, and respond to the same emergencies as every other fire service. The only difference? They do it almost entirely as volunteers.
For years, Arranmore Fire Station has had two retained (paid) firefighter positions. Following the recent and upcoming retirement of those firefighters, Donegal County Council has decided not to replace them. Instead, the community has been told that if enough volunteers cannot be recruited, the fire service could simply be removed from the island altogether.
This is unacceptable.
The only other island in Ireland with its own fire station—the Aran Islands, Co. Galway—has a fully retained crew of 12 firefighters. Why should Árainn Mhór be treated differently?
This isn't about special treatment. It's about equal treatment, public safety, and protecting the people who live on and visit Arranmore Island.
We are calling on Donegal County Council to maintain and properly staff Arranmore Fire Station with retained firefighters, ensuring our community receives the same level of protection as every other community in Ireland.
