SOS MAR MENOR: Fight for the environment and protect our sea! Murcia - Spain - Europe.
The Issue
¡Embrace and protect MAR MENOR in Spain from wherever you are! A small sea requires a huge protection. Can we count on you, sailor?
Mar Menor is a coastal saltwater lagoon of 135km2 located in Murcia, Spain: a unique ecosystem due to its ecological, historical and economical value, as well as its landscapes and the flora and fauna that inhabits there.
Unfortunately, for many years, a number of threats are endangering the area, such as:
- The dredging and enlargement of the Estacio channel, in 1973, which had negative repercussions on the chemical composition of its waters and introduced foreign species.
- Heavy metals from nearby mines and forgeries are not sealed away properly and reach the lagoon through rain.
- Constructions and machinery on the beaches destroy the sea bottom and make its waters muddy, threatening this singular habitat.
- A high number of leisure and sports ports are acting as a barrier that holds the currents from passing through, causing the formation and accumulation of mud.
- The agricultural industrialization process has led to tons of agrochemical spills and an increase in illegal irrigation (which nowadays represents up to a 25%). 1500 unauthorized water wells on the fields of Cartagena remain unclosed.
All this has resulted in anoxemias and thousands of dead specimens, creating a “green goo” on the water surface. Learn more about the problem by watching the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ89VyzG3fg
Let’s take action together before it’s too late!
Our goal, through an ILP (Popular Legislative Initiative), is to get public institutions to wise up about this issue and pass a law that endows the area with legal personality and rights, puts an end to the ecocide, and preserves its biodiversity. We want to accomplish, once and for all, that urgent measures are taken to guarantee the environmental sustainability of this spot and recover any affected areas.
Ultimately, we want Mar Menor to be deemed as a REGIONAL PARK.
For employment in the tourism sector, sustainable fishing and agriculture; and, especially, for the health of current and future generations: with your voice and signature, together, we can make a change.
Taking care of our ocean is everyone’s task. Thanks for your support.
