Preserve international culture in Lisbon!

Salvaguardem a cultura internacional em Lisboa!

We, the undersigned, request your attention to the following matter of urgent concern.

The Lisbon Players, an international English-language theatre company based in Estrela Hall in Lisbon, the theatre in which it has been working for almost 70 years, is in danger of being evicted by the British Embassy in Lisbon.

The Embassy are selling the ‘Estrela Site’, in which the theatre is situated, for the price of 3.5 million Euros, to a private buyer, Arquimelo 2 S.A., whose intentions for the future of the site are far from clear.

A promissory contract has been signed for sale of the property, situated next to the British Cemetery and Anglican Church in Lisbon, with vacant possession of the buildings on the site, which includes Estrela Hall, the British Hospital, a Jewish cemetery, a building constructed by the Royal British Club in the mid-20th century, now occupied by the Portuguese Ordem dos Economistas and the British-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce, and a parsonage, constructed in the 18th century.

This contract has been published by Lisbon’s Municipal Assembly, who have already shown their support for the Lisbon Players, considering it an essential part of the culture of the city.

The Lisbon Players, who count on the support of a wide national and international public, now needs support from all those in a position to influence events, to save this theatre, and continue their work there, which is an essential part of Lisbon’s cultural life.

We call on all who can do so to help safeguard the future of Lisbon Players in Estrela Hall.

Nós, os signatários desta petição, pedimos que seja dada imediatamente atenção ao seguinte assunto da máxima urgência.

A associação Lisbon Players, companhia internacional de teatro em língua inglesa, sediada no Estrela Hall em Lisboa, onde realiza o seu trabalho ininterruptamente há já quase 70 anos, encontra-se em perigo de ser despejada pela Embaixada Britânica em Lisboa.

A Embaixada está a vender o quarteirão (no qual se insere a sala de teatro) pelo valor de €3.5M ao comprador privado Arquimelo 2 S.A., cujas intenções para o espaço são pouco claras. 

Foi assinado um contrato-promessa para a venda da propriedade, situada junto ao Cemitério Inglês e à Igreja Anglicana de Lisboa, com a condição de todos os edifícios incluídos estarem inteiramente devolutos e desocupados de pessoas e bens. A propriedade em questão inclui o Estrela Hall, o British Hospital, um cemitério Judeu, um edifício construído pelo Royal British Club em meados do século XX (atualmente ocupado pela Ordem dos Economistas portuguesa e pela Câmara de Comércio Luso-Britânica) e um Presbitério construído no século XVIII.

Este contrato foi publicado pela Assembleia Municipal de Lisboa, que já afirmou o seu apoio aos Lisbon Players como elemento essencial da cultura da cidade. Os Lisbon Players, que contam com o apoio de um grande número de espetadores nacionais e internacionais, precisam agora do apoio daqueles que estão numa posição que lhes permite ter influência nestes acontecimentos para salvaguardar este teatro, e assim poderem continuar a exercer aí o seu trabalho, que é uma parte essencial da vida cultural da cidade de Lisboa.
