Stop the reboot/remake/recreation of David Bowie's Labyrinth.
The issue
In light of the recent death of David Bowie (AKA: David Jones), such a decision to revisits and recreate the story of the 1986 movie of Labyrinth is beyond disrespectful and abhorrent. Jones' family, friends co-workers are still all grieving, and it has not even been two weeks. since his passing before this news was announced.
The film's cult following that has cemented a huge part of his legacy for three decades, and even more generations. It is an insult to David's his work, to his life, death, and to the intelligence of his fans spanning almost 50 years. David Bowie's work was not just within the screen role he played within the movie, or his production of the soundtrack. He also had creative input with the sets and designs that still have young children today's attention and falling in love with the film.
We do not believe this re-creation is needed. The film still stands the test of time even after 30 years and to destroy that acknowledge just to hope to "cash in" on Jones' sudden passing is beyond disrespectful and greedy. If it is really needed to show of the film's legacy, why not re-release the original film worldwide in theaters? If it is really money that Sony, TriStar and The Jim Henson Co are after, they might find that the beloved original film could do more for that approach, rather than dismissing it for the true magic that it is.
In respect to David's legacy, many fans implore you NOT to do this. Don't make this film and banish everything that the fans love, the cast love, and the memories that it holds. Is it's 30 year run really not telling enough that there is more to this film than money? Labyrinth is art, and art that was far ahead of its time in so many ways. And to ignore them, is just a tragedy of disrespect in itself.
