Badshah, in collaboration with Jacqueline Fernandez, dropped his latest single 'Genda Phool'. Let me tell you a little about the song’s exploitative history. Even if one lets go of the cultural appropriation and fetishising of Bengali women, without casting an actual one, it is especially offensive how many made tons of money off of Ratan Kahar's (a folk singer living in the Birbhum district of West Bengal who wrote and sang the song in 1972), 'Boro Loker Biti Lo'.
Not only was the original artist not paid a single penny for his song, but there were also no credits given either. Ratan is a musician who has lived all his life in poverty, like most folk artists. This is beyond disgusting. The song has strong cultural values that were reduced to Jacqueline performing a ritualistic dance in a hyper-sexualised manner (which has nothing to do with the song/lyrics by the way). I will keep talking about this loud and far until credit is given and royalties are paid to Ratan Kahar or the video and the song are taken down altogether. STOP STEALING OUR CULTURE. STOP STEALING INDIGENOUS ART.
