Bill Russell started this petition to Sonic Drive-In

The Two-Guys (portrayed by Peter Grosz and T.J. Jagodowski) have become an icon since first appearing in ads for the popular drive-in fast food chain Sonic in 2002. Their performances were very entertaining but also did an excellent job at promoting various products and promotions that Sonic had. This is a very rare thing, to have an ad format that is both entertaining but also has substance, and effectively promotes products (the purpose of an ad in the first place).

Starting in 2020, Sonic abandoned the Two-Guys campaign in order to pursue a new one focused on showing “Real Folks” according to Sonic CMO Lori Abou Habib Sonic wants “...guests to see themselves reflected in our ads,”.

While this is a good goal from a marketing standpoint, the new ad campaign completely fails in almost every aspect of a successful advertisement, not to mention they are just flat-out annoying.

These new commercials do portray ‘ordinary’ people, they are often too ordinary. This causes the ads to have a very annoying, cringy dialogue, all the while doing a sub-par job at promoting the products Sonic is putting out. There has yet to be a single ad in this new campaign that has made me want to go to Sonic, if anything the ads make me want to go to Sonic less.

I know I am not alone in this opinion, no matter who I’m with, if one of the new Sonic ads comes on there is at least one person (often several people) who say things along the lines of “God, these ads are annoying”, “I can’t stand these new ads”, “What happened to those two guys?”.

The Two-Guys succeed everywhere this new campaign fails, and are simply more entertaining. I believe that if Sonic decides to bring back the Two-Guys, they will be much more successful. Plus, people everywhere would never have to watch these god-awful “Real Folks” ads again.
