Sodexo has begun to use biodegradable carry-out boxes! We are grateful for your support on this issue and are excited to have a more sustainable carry-out option on campus. Many things have undergone changes this year including the dining halls. These changes such as a drastic increase in the number of students who choose to carry-out their meals have led to an increase in single-use disposable products being consumed. We recognize that these measures have been put into place for the safety of students who rely on the dining hall services and they have made our return to campus possible. With that being stated, the negative effects that this added waste will have on the Truman community and the earth as a whole has not changed.

Student Government and the many environmental organizations on campus are looking to work with Sodexo to find products that allow for the safety of students and the planet to both be priorities. The current carry-out box is made of Styrofoam. The Environmental Protection Agency determined that the production process of Styrofoam is “the 5th largest creator of hazardous waste”. Furthermore, with around 70% of all meals the dining hall serves are being consumed as carry-out. This leads to an excessive amount of waste that will take 500 years to break down. This means that the products that are meant to be keeping students safe are unintentionally harming the environment.

Our goal is to find a sustainable carry-out alterative that way students can stay safe and the earth stays green. Show your support for using sustainable carry-out boxes at the dining halls on Truman's Campus by signing this petition.
