Hold Media Accountable: Common Sense Reform for Digital Giants

Hold Media Accountable: Common Sense Reform for Digital Giants
The Issue
The Cambridge Analytica scandal is only the latest of many mistakes Facebook has made on its way to becoming a digital giant. What is happening with Facebook will happen again if we don’t take a stand. We have to hold them accountable.
When millions of users’ information was used without their consent, Facebook went about their business, and didn’t make a public statement until years later. When thousands of fake profiles converged and spread false information and propaganda during the 2016 presidential election, Facebook said nothing. They weren’t required to.
Facebook needs to be regulated so it’s being held accountable to someone other than its investors. They need to value people over profit. Facebook has continually failed to be transparent with its users about how their information is being collected, how it’s being used, and how it impacts them.
The Facebook algorithm continues to affect our society in in ways that are unexplained by Facebook, and unregulated, and unaccountable to any outside agency.
When it comes to understanding how our information is being used, there shouldn’t be hesitation or confusion. We want transparency. We want an honest conversation about what’s happening online. We need to hold media accountable.
