The Issue

Due to many not being aware of Photosensitive Epilepsy and the health issues that come with the condition, there are things such as edits and social media platforms that bring a higher risk for seizures. There are even some people that post flashes as a way to target the Epilepsy community.

Photosensitive Epilepsy is a rare form of Epilepsy. It causes abnormal activity in the brain when exposed to flashes, strobe lights, bright lights, etc. People are at a risk of hospitalization or even death when exposed to a trigger.

I was diagnosed with Photosensitive Epilepsy in 2014. A couple of years after being diagnosed I discovered that people like to joke around about flickering the lights in front of me. I ended up going into a severe tonic-clonic seizure from it and went to the hospital. People have made more jokes about Epilepsy in front of me. Social media is one of the biggest platforms where people joke about seizures.

I'm hoping that more awareness is brought to Photosensitive Epilepsy in order to help keep and make others feel safe. Many people with Photosensitive Epilepsy have to be cautious not only on social media but in public to.
