Mount Seymour, B.C. - Please Allow Snowskates on the Mountain!
The Issue
Snowskating is an alpine sport that utilizes the same lift accessed terrain as a ski or snowboard. Riders of snowskates have metal edged skiis and retaining devices. One of the reasons for not accepting snowboards in the early days was cited as the lack of release mechanism. Snowskating has solved this problem in spades. There are no bindings on a snowskate when a rider falls they simply collapse down on to the snow. No more "rag-dolling". In order to prevent runaway skiis a snowskater uses a leash system which allows them to keep control of the snowskate in unruly situations. Terje Haakonsen rides a snowskate. Powder lasts longer for skiiers to enjoy. Snoskaters don't track powder out deliberately the way snowboarder do. Snowskaters like terrain that reminds them of skateparks and that means they like packed powder as found in terrain parks with many features like Mount Seymour had. My dad and i ski together so we don't go to Seymour anymore. Having snowboarded mount seymour since 1987, nowadays I really only snowskate. Thanks to having snowboard related arthritis since the age of 25 snowboarding really is no longer an option. In that sense for me a snowskate is much like an adaptive ski that allows me to continue enjoying the mountain. Since we snowskates are willing to sign release of liability waivers like everyone else we would like access to the slopes.
