Snow day for Blue Valley Schools
Snow day for Blue Valley Schools
The Issue
We, the concerned students, parents, and community members of BVUSD 229, urge the district to prioritize safety by canceling school in light of the extreme winter weather conditions. Over the past few days, our area has experienced significant snowfall, with accumulations reaching up to 17 inches in Overland Park, and more is on the way.
These hazardous conditions have led to over 100 reported traffic crashes in Johnson County, with at least 10 resulting in injuries.
Additionally, only 25% of residential streets in Overland Park have been cleared, leaving many roads unsafe for travel.
These hazardous conditions pose significant risks for students, staff, and families commuting to and from school. Icy roads increase the likelihood of accidents, while unplowed streets and walkways make traveling on foot treacherous. Additionally, school buses may struggle to operate safely in these conditions, putting everyone on board at risk.
By canceling school, BVUSD 229 will not only protect its students and staff but also allow city and state crews to focus on clearing the roads and ensuring safer conditions for all residents.
We urge the district to act swiftly and prioritize safety above all else. Please sign and share this petition to make our voices heard. Together, we can advocate for the well-being of our community during this severe winter storm.
