Discontinue the use of Styrofoam Cups

Since the opening of your first store in New Orleans in 1973 and your first franchised smoothie bar/health food store in the United States in 1989, it is not surprising that Smoothie King was ranked no. 1 by Entrepreneur magazine in the juice bar category for the 18th year and no. 70 overall on the 2011 Franchise 500 list. In the relentless pursuit of your venerable mission- 'To relentlessly influence and help more & more people achieve a healthier lifestyle' - you have spread to 600 franchise units in 32 states and the Caymans.

Have you wondered where will your Smoothie King cup be in the next 500 years? The used Smoothie King Cup will be around much longer than the  Statue of Liberty !

The US Environmental Protection Agency reports that twenty five billion polystyrene (aka Styrofoam) cups are thrown away each year. This is 30% of our solid waste in the landfills (refer: http://www.pacebutler.com/blog/styrofoam-recycling-tips/) By estimating the contribution to the waste which will remain on our planet at least for the next 500 years, I hope you realize and realize soon enough that serving smoothies in paper or biodegradable cups should be done VERY SOON.  I know for a fact that you will receive an increased demand for smoothies, at least at your store in Saint Louis, MO. My husband and I love the smoothies of your store, but as the lovers of the nature we do not allow ourselves to indulge in your delicious offerings because of your one resounding flaw; the cups you use for every smoothie are made out of Expanded Polystyrene Foam, EPS (aka Styrofoam) .

Though there are ways to recycle the styrofoam,' relatively few cities that have facilities to recycle this material and because of contamination issues in the EPS used in the food industry. This last one is a particularly costly issue – recylers have to spend more resources on personnel and work hours just to clean up the used food packaging material they collect before these can be recycled. There are publicized advances in technology recently that will allow recyclers to accept used food packaging, but these innovations are available only to the big cities, at present. Recently, a 10 year old Mia Hansen made Jamba Juice to publicly stop using styrofoam cups by the end of 2013. This change happened when 130,000 people from all over the world signed her petition on Change.org. Motivated by Mia, I hope that Smoothie King too will abandon its business practice which is deterimental to the environment. I hope and wish the best for Smoothie King.

With sincere hope for a Cleaner Future,

Ayesha
