The Santa Monica Conservancy and the Samohi Alumni Association are both engaged in an effort to preserve the Prospect Hill Academic Core at Santa Monica High School. The core includes the Business, Art, English (Humanities) Buildings along with the historic centerpiece of the campus, the History Building.
The Historic Core of the Santa Monica High School Campus constitutes a historic grouping that could become part of the Facilities Master Plan upgrades. The core consists of the English (1924/1937), History (1913/1937), Art (1937), Business (1913/1937), and Business Annex (1940) Buildings, which all retain their original 1913 location, WPA architectural character, and orientation atop Prospect Hill. By retaining the historic academic core of the campus, an opportunity to restore the original quad area as an open space connected to the landmarked Barnum Hall and historic Greek Theater presents itself, enhancing rather than undermining the historic context of those two acknowledged, major historic resources.

We need your help. Please write a letter of support for preservation and rehabilitation of these campus buildings to the School Board and Superintendent. brd@smmusd.org, bdrati@smmusd.org, cc: advocacy@smconservancy.org, samohialumni@gmail.com now.

Please submit letters by November 10th or contact me should you like to speak at tonight's meeting on November 5th.

The buildings are slated for demolition in the Summer of 2021. Time is of the essence as plans are being fast tracked by the district and the school board is the only agency with power to reverse this course.

Remember this is a four pronged issue. Preservation of historical resources for our city , sustainability, fiscal stewardship, and protecting meaningful cultural connections for our students and future generations. Please call, text or write me if you'd like to take a leadership role in our efforts 310-600-7306, advocacy@smconservancy.org

Please write me for a copy of the Independent Analysis of Studies of Historic Resources on the Samohi Campus compiled by Nina Fresco and the Santa Monica Conservancy.
