Slow down & move over

The Issue

Slow Down, Move Over" Law

Dear, Michigan office of Highway Safety Planning

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to you today as a concerned citizen, urging you to take immediate action to strengthen and raise awareness about the "Slow Down, Move Over" law in our state.

As you may know, the "Slow Down, Move Over" law is designed to protect the safety of emergency responders, road workers, and other individuals who are working on or along our roads. The law requires drivers to slow down and, when safe to do so, move over to an adjacent lane to provide a safe space for these individuals.

While the law is a step in the right direction, it is evident that many drivers are either uninformed about its existence or fail to comply with its requirements. This lack of awareness and non-compliance puts the lives of our emergency responders, road workers, and others at unnecessary risk.

Therefore, I, along with the undersigned concerned citizens, kindly request the following actions to be taken:

1. Public Awareness Campaign: Launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate drivers about the "Slow Down, Move Over" law. This campaign should include television and radio advertisements, social media campaigns, and informational brochures distributed through various channels.

2. Driver Education: Include detailed information about the "Slow Down, Move Over" law in driver education courses and license exams. It is crucial to ensure that every new driver is aware of their responsibility to slow down and move over when encountering emergency vehicles or road workers.

3. Increased Enforcement: Strengthen the enforcement of the "Slow Down, Move Over" law. Increase the presence of law enforcement officers in areas where violations frequently occur, and impose stricter penalties for non-compliance. This will serve as a deterrent and encourage drivers to adhere to the law.

4. Road Signage and Markings: Improve the visibility and placement of signs indicating the "Slow Down, Move Over" law along our roads. Clear and prominent signage will serve as a constant reminder to drivers, reducing the likelihood of violations.

By taking these actions, we can significantly enhance the safety of our emergency responders, road workers, and fellow citizens. We believe that raising awareness about the "Slow Down, Move Over" law and enforcing its compliance will save lives and prevent unnecessary accidents.

Please consider our petition and take the necessary steps to address this urgent matter. We, the undersigned, stand together in our commitment to making our roads safer for everyone.

Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. We eagerly await your positive response and decisive action.

Sincerely, we the people
