The Issue

Petition for the Establishment of a Skatepark in Fort Myers and Neighboring Towns

Introduction: Currently, there are no free, city-owned skateparks accessible to the public in Fort Myers or neighboring towns such as Cape Coral, Lehigh Acres, and Naples. Cape Coral's Eagles skatepark, owned by the city, charges admission, and other available facilities like the Edge Skatepark in Naples impose high fees. The only free skatepark in proximity is located about an hour away in Bonita Springs.

Need for a Skatepark: With skateboarding being included in the Olympic program, the demand for spaces to practice this increasingly popular sport has escalated. However, the lack of accessible facilities inhibits the development of skateboarding in Fort Myers. Many families cannot afford admission fees or the inconvenience of traveling out of town for their children to pursue their passion. Moreover, the absence of creative and physical spaces of expression increases the risk of youths turning to harmful outlets. A new skatepark not only addresses these issues but also presents an opportunity to mitigate graffiti problems by providing a designated area for artistic expression.

Benefits of a Skatepark:

Safety and Accessibility: A skatepark would offer a safe and designated space for skateboarders, inline skaters, and BMX riders of all ages, reducing the risk associated with skating in streets and other inappropriate locations.

Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles: Skateboarding promotes physical activity and various health benefits, including cardiovascular exercise, improved balance, coordination, and agility. A dedicated space for these activities encourages youths to engage in positive recreational pursuits, contributing to their overall well-being.

Community Building and Inclusivity: Skateboarding fosters a sense of community and inclusivity, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds. Investing in a skatepark creates a welcoming environment where people of all ages, genders, and skill levels can socialize and support one another.

Economic Growth and Tourism: A skatepark has the potential to stimulate the local economy and tourism by attracting skaters from neighboring communities and tourists. This influx of visitors can generate revenue for local businesses and enhance the overall vitality of the area.

Conclusion: In conclusion, we urge Mayor Anderson and Lee County to support our petition and take the necessary steps to bring a skatepark to our community. By investing in this project, we can create a safer, healthier, and more vibrant environment for all residents of Fort Myers and neighboring towns.
