SIU Black Alumni Group Meeting
The Issue
Several members (hereinafter alumnus, alumna and/or alumni) of The Black Alumni Group of the Southern Illinois University Alumni Association (hereinafter BAG) have expressed concerns about the organization’s purpose, mission and integrity. The BAG Bylaws require an annual meeting of the organization. This petition is a call for a BAG meeting.
Concerns initially were expressed following the 2013 annual business meeting which was deemed disorderly and unprincipled. Some alumni left the meeting prior to adjournment. The distaste caused some regular reunion alumni attendees to forego the 2015 BAG Reunion.
Indeed, registration numbers for the 2015 BAG Reunion were down. Those alumni in attendance expressed dissatisfaction with the planning and execution, incidents of questionable behavior, and the appearance of disunity.
Therefore, by affixing our signatures below, we hereby request:
1. A general BAG meeting be held no later than October 31, 2016.
2. That because members reside in a myriad of geographic locations, attendance at the meeting be available in person (face-to-face) and via teleconference, webinar and/or videoconference.
3. That in addition to any other business, the following items be placed on the agenda:
- Determining whether the (30th Anniversary) BAG Reunion will be held in 2017 and, if so, if it should occur during the announced dates (July 13-16, 2017); furthermore, if decided that it should not occur in 2017, when the next BAG Reunion will take place.
- Establishing special (ad hoc) committees comprised of at least one alumna/us of each attendance decade from the 1960s through the 2010s for the express purposes of (a) planning the 30th anniversary BAG celebration and (b) creating standing policies and procedures for the BAG scholarships.
- Amending the bylaws to allow general business and committee meetings to take place using technology including, but not limited to teleconferences, videoconferences and/or webinars so as to allow participation by alumni residing in various locales.
- Entertaining a motion on a “Vote of No Confidence” as to current (2015-17) BAG officers (individually or collectively).
