Thank you for taking the time to sign this partition and for your comments that show how strongly people feel about the decision to close the course. The partition has already been the subject of an article in the Leicester Mercury and Mildland Golfer's online pinboard. http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/Golfers-launch-petition-calling-mayor-Sir-Peter/story-25803207-detail/story.html Please continue to ask as many people as possible to sign, as a copy of this partition will be sent directly to the Mayor. The situation regarding Western Park is very frustrating. The course is a great asset of the people of Leicester that has been neglected and allowed to decline by the Council. The Mayor has decided to close the course despite the results of two public consultations showing the majority of the public support it staying open. The land is prime building land and many suspect this is the main reason behind the closure, although this is denied by the Council and Mayor. Two groups of Councillors have "called-in" the decision to close the course meaning it would have to go for further scrutiny. The call-in will now be considered by the Overview Select Committee at it's next meeting on 15th January. It should then be referred to Full Council at it's next scheduled meeting (22nd January 2015). I have applied to speak at the meeting stating my objections to the decision to close Western Park Golf Course as follows: · The two consultations carried out by the City Council were very one-sided and the results have been ignored. · The accompanying documentation was completely biased towards the closure of the course · We have never been allowed to enter into a meaningful discussion regarding the future of the course and any arguments we have made to buy the course time have fallen on deaf ears. · With a small amount of research I been able to find evidence to support Western Park being a viable business · Western Park is a vital link for young people to take up the sport of golf · Western Park is a social hub for its elderly members · The aesthetic landscape is much loved by the local community and is the last resting place of many past players whose families have chosen to spread their ashes around the course or plant trees in their memory It is the duty of the Council to maintain and keep the assets of Leicester for future generations not run them into ground by not reinvesting profits or selling them for building land or road development as soon as there is a plausible excuse. There is a public gallery for the meeting that can hold over a 100 people. The meeting will be held at Meeting Room 1 and 2, Ground floor, City Hall, 115 Charles Street. Please come and show your support. Filling the public gallery with people that oppose the decision to close the course would really add weight to our argument. Thanks Martin Cobb
