Western Park Golf Course was opened on May 1st 1910 by the Mayor of Leicester after being championed by a number of Leicester Councillors. It was closed on the 31st October 2015 by Leicester’s first elected City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby against the will of Leicester Councillors, the local community and the majority of people in Leicester. Even though a large number of Leicester city councillors asked for the council to help find a way to keep the course open the mayor still refused to even entertain working with the club to make a workable solution. The course had been poorly managed and underfunded by the council for the last 15-20 years but despite this the course itself was far too good to waste. This council has destroyed a club that has been part of the local community for over a hundred years. The Mayor has stated in the the article attached that the land will probably be used for industrial units and housing.
