The UK's Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation calls for the use of crop-based bio-fuels which will cause food prices to soar and make global warming worse as more forests are lost to the cultivation of these crops. Conventional palm oil especially is one of the biggest causes of global warming and it must not be allowed to be used as fuel!
I am adding my name to this petition to show my support for the International Development Committee’s stand on Crop-based Bio-fuels.
I share your concern for food security and stable food prices and also do not believe that we should be burning up finite supplies of foods in order to create energy.
As an opponent of any scheme that would see food based oils being used to create bio-fuel in the name of “renewable” energy, I urge the Committee to stand firm on the issue of Indirect Land Use Change( ILUC ) and demand its inclusion in any Renewable Energy schemes.
Vege-oils, in particular palm oil, has been scientifically proven to be a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. We have to face the fact that palm oil sources that are available today for any bio-fuel scheme will likely come from sources that have destroyed climate cooling forests. To accept such dirty sources for energy will only encourage the destruction of more forests in order to create more supply.
I thank you and the International Development Committee of MPs for taking a realistic stance on bio-fuels.
