Please stop the cruel trade and export of monkeys for research

Mauritius is one of the world's largest suppliers of monkeys for the research industry, exporting thousands of animals every year to the USA and the European Union.
A BUAV and Soko-Tierschutz investigation has uncovered the disturbing truth about what happens to the monkeys of Mauritius once they reach the laboratory. The investigation took place at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Germany (MPI), a leading European research facility.
At the MPI, long-tailed macaques from Mauritius were subjected to ‘a living nightmare’; a life of deprivation, stress and suffering for basic research into how the brain processes information. Subjected to major surgery to have a chamber implanted in their skulls, the monkeys suffered swelling, bruising and bleeding head wounds. For some, their head wounds became severely infected, including with MRSA, resulting in further suffering and discomfort.
This is essentially basic research to understand the neural processes in macaques; with any application to human beings highly speculative. We believe the use of primates in this way to be an ill-conceived approach and that diverting scarce research funds to study macaques’ brains is wasteful. There are better ways to do this research that do not inflict harm and suffering on animals.
This is a nightmare world for these wild, sentient and intelligent animals and a far cry from living freely in their lush forest home in Mauritius. The experiments at the MPI could last for months, at the end of which, the monkeys were killed and dissected.
An earlier investigation carried out by the BUAV showed the cruelty and suffering involved in the trapping and breeding of wild monkeys on Mauritius - torn from their families and jungle homes and imprisoned in unnatural conditions in large facilities, to produce babies for the research industry.
Please join our call today to the Mauritius Prime Minister to stop sending thousands of monkeys every year to a life of pain and unimaginable suffering in research facilities around the world.
