Single income households are really struggling to make ends meet every fortnight. I face the challenge of living pay cheque to pay cheque, striving to provide my child, whom I homeschool, with a nurturing environment after the traditional school system failed to meet their needs. The choice to homeschool is a necessity rather than an option, driven by the desire to ensure my child receives the quality education they deserve. Yet, the financial burden on single homeschooling parents, like myself, in New South Wales and elsewhere is unbearably heavy.

Currently, single homeschooling parents only receive the standard single parent pension despite undertaking the dual role of both parents, educator and caretaker every single day.

Homeschooling demands our full attention and dedication, far beyond the typical school hours. It’s not just about the nights spent with our children but also the countless days dedicated to their education and development.

Although child support exists, it inadequately addresses the true needs of homeschooling families. The system calculates support based on overnight custody rather than the reality faced by homeschooling parents who provide education throughout the day. This discrepancy leaves many of us, who have chosen to or been forced to homeschool for our children's welfare, with insufficient financial support.

A change is needed! We urge the NSW Government to acknowledge the distinctive challenges faced by single homeschooling parents and adjust financial assistance accordingly. Possible measures could include an increase in the single parent pension specifically for homeschooling parents or the creation of additional grants and subsidies. This support will allow us to meet daily expenses, purchase necessary educational supplies, and provide nutritious meals, ultimately ensuring a better educational environment for homeschooling families.
