Simon O’Connor needs to resign from Parliament

The issue

Simon O’Connor National Party MP for Tamaki opposed the decriminalisation of abortion in this country, a bill which rightfully has given the freedom of choice to women in this country. The freedom of choice for a woman as to what happens to her own body and in the case of pregnancy is a fundamental right. This petition is not here to debate that. We are demanding Simon O’Connor’s resignation because he has stepped beyond the boundary of public service to push his personal beliefs and views. O’Connor posted on Twitter a tweet which said “Today is a good day” following the Supreme Court in America taking away the freedom of choice from women and rolling the clock back hundreds of years. This tweet was not only offensive to women in this country and everywhere but showed scant regard for those he serves in a public office. In spite of the fact that he was made to take it down by Christopher Luxon, it’s obvious that O’Connor holds the views he made so public. This is not the first time O’Connor has voted against the right to choose. He also voted against the conversion therapy bill which was passed and makes it illegal for anyone to engage in this harmful practice. Yet, O’Connor did not agree. That is not acceptable in any politician who needs to recognise the needs of the people they serve come before their own beliefs and agenda whatever they are. Simon O’Connor does not believe in the right to choose. We believe that an MP should not serve this country who holds these kinds of views. O’Connor has shown himself incapable of doing so. Opinions and beliefs should not colour doing the right thing. O’Connor is not fit for the office of MP. Simon O’Connor now needs to do the right thing and resign from Parliament.
