Open The Student Union Building (SUB)

Open The Student Union Building (SUB)
The Issue
On January 20th, 2022, the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) sent an email stating that they will close the Student Union Building (SUB) until February 18th, 2022. The SUB serves as the main center for studying, eating, socializing, and relaxing between classes for many students at the Burnaby campus. With the closure of the SUB, students will lose one of the largest areas where students can spend time. Therefore, the closure of the SUB will force many students to cram into other spots around campus and thus, increase the risk of COVID-19 transmission between students and staff. Unfortunately, the SFSS has yet to provide a logical explanation for closing the SUB nor provide any scientific data that shows the closure of the SUB will reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. The lack of explanation and scientific evidence from the SFSS is unsurprising as the closure of the SUB seems to be a political move made by the SFSS to portray their stance of returning to in-person learning. The decision made by the SFSS to close the SUB treats students and staff like pawns and puts their lives in greater danger. Therefore, the members of the SFSS should seriously reconsider their poor choice and open the SUB!
