The RSPCA, the BHS, Blue Cross and other horse charities have ALL said that the equine crisis is with us NOW and growing. The number of animals abandoned has gone up by 70% and the increase in complaints around mistreatment has gone up by 1600% !! The horse passport system is NOT being policed effectively, horses are being tethered on land and left - sometimes with no water available, horses are being abandoned and owners not found and therefore not being held accountable. The charities are at bursting point and horses are being put down needlessly.
IF horse owners were traceable, IF fly grazing were against the law, IF people were prosecuted for maltreatment or mistreatment of their animals then maybe there wouldn't be quite so much suffering.
I saw the photos of the poor foal pawing at his mothers dead body on a housing estate in Wicklow, Ireland, after she had been beaten to within a breath of her death by her owners. She had been boxed and had not shown willing to come out. The men beat her but she still refused out. So they left the box door open and drove with propulsion enough to make the horse fall out of the back - breaking her legs ! They continued to beat her until she was nearly dead. Onlookers watched but were afraid to get involved. Where in the World is that OK to happen ?
Things HAVE to change. Every horse belongs to someone - get systems in place that allow us to know who they belong to. Accountability counts.
Better the Government listens to us now and changes things, than to listen to another foal whinneying for his dead mother as she lays on the road in an housing estate somewhere as people watch.
