Man’s best friend, dogs. Has always been with us and accompanied people through life. I'm sure that most of you have pet dogs as they are a popular choice. Unfortunately, here in the Philippines, they are not being treated as living beings but usually as a “Bantay” nothing more than a CCTV. Even with the Animal Welfare Act, it is not as reinforced as it should be. People have normalized keeping dogs in small cages all day whether it rains or shines, not giving the poor animal any time outside. Killing dogs has also been appearing in the news more often than wanted. An example is Killua, a golden retriever who was brutally killed and left in a sack to be found. There are many more examples, some not in light due to it being stray dogs but they deserve as much justice as Killua does. Senator Grace Poe has suggested the new Animal Welfare Act which will seek to include animal welfare education in school. The act gears firmly toward responsible pet ownership and accountability to those in control of animals with strict penalties. It also includes creating a barangay animal welfare task force which is a way to monitor all animals in every location.As such I ask of you fellow animal lovers, let us support the passing of this act to give justice to those in the past and let there be no more victims in the future.
