The La Cañada Flintridge City Council is considering an amendment to the Municipal Code noise ordinance to ban the use of gasoline-powered leaf blowers. At the City Council meeting on Sept. 20, 2022, 2 Councilmembers voted against the ban, 2 voted for it, and 1 was absent. The amendment was NOT passed.

The Council could consider providing funds to defray the cost of changing to electric equipment, and provide a reasonable timeline for the change.

• The state of California plans only to ban the SALE of gas powered yard maintenance equipment starting in 2024, not ban the use of the blowers. 
• Gas leaf blowers emit noise at decibel levels that can cause hearing issues—a noise level that is ALREADY RESTRICTED in LCF!
• Gas leaf blowers produce greenhouse gas emissions that exceed the emissions from passenger cars in the state.
• The two-stroke engines used in gas blowers create high levels of formaldehyde, benzene and fine particulate matter which are known to cause health issues such as dizziness, asthma attacks, headaches, heart and lung diseases. This affects the gardeners AND LCF citizens--families, kids, seniors!
• Many cities have already banned gas powered leaf blowers, including Pasadena, South Pasadena, Los Angeles, and Claremont.
