A citizen stands up. A threat is issued. And the country watches.

Recent reports from Uttarakhand describe a deeply troubling situation: a private individual, Deepak Kumar, allegedly facing open calls for violence, after intervening to protect a senior Muslim shopkeeper from intimidation over the name of his shop. 

Media reports (TOI) state that Lalit Sharma, of the Hindu Raksha Dal, publicly announced a monetary reward, linked to threats on the life of Deepak Kumar. An FIR has reportedly been registered in connection with these statements.

This threat crosses a very clear and dangerous line.

Pause for a moment. No matter who we are, what we believe, or how we vote — no person should live under the shadow of death threats.

When violence and intimidation become the norm, when fear replaces law — everyone becomes less safe.

Failure to respond decisively risks good governance, emboldens lumpen elements, and undermines public confidence in law enforcement.

We respectfully call upon the authorities to:

• Act swiftly and take deterrent legal action on those issuing such threats and inciting violence
• Protect citizens facing credible threats and intimidation
• Reassure the public that the law protects everyone.

This is bigger than one incident. Bigger than one person. It is about the kind of society we are becoming.

Today it is one individual in Uttarakhand… tomorrow it could be anyone, anywhere.
