SIGNS SAVE LIVES!

Residents of the City of Decatur, as well as otherwise concerned citizens related to students attending either school, hereby petition for adequate signage between Baum Elementary School and Montessori Academy for Peace, specifically Eastbound on East Cantrell (4300-4400 blocks) and Northbound on 44th Street approaching East Cantrell. Thomas Jefferson was a middle school; it is now MAP serving students preschool to 8th grade including Life Skills and hearing impaired programs. Signs need updated to reflect these changes!

The response of the Public Works Department stating "signs don't slow people down, enforcement does" dismisses citizens’ concerns, offloads the responsibility of keeping the public safe entirely onto our already thin stretched law enforcement, and ultimately has taxpaying residents posting their own temporary signage in an attempt to keep our neighborhood safe.

All of the following signage applies to this area:

DEAF SCHOOL (MAP houses a program for hearing impaired students)

BLIND DRIVEWAYS (one is also a special needs student's bus stop)

BUS STOP AHEAD (there are multiple)

School Pedestrians (1 sign is up)

School Zone Ahead (1 sign is now up)

Stop Sign Ahead (4 signs were added)

Deer Crossing (2 signs were added)
