1. Pilot study by UIC Professor Erdal from the School of Public Health confirms what we already suspected: GI’s operations is exposing the Community to higher levels of airborne metallic pollutants (PM2.5) and potentially negative health impact. Per the National Institute for Health, PM2.5 is known to "promote cancers."
2. The composition of the scrap metal/coatings received by GI is unknown.
3. GI does not pre-screen its metals for toxic coatings or dangerous metals (i.e. LEAD) before shredding.
4. Most scrap received is industrial scrap received on large roll-off containers. Some of the trucks have out-of-state license plates.
5. Tests for SVOC/VOC generated by the shredding process were not conducted. Most public health professional agree that SVOC/VOC, such as cancer-causing Benzene, is a greater health risk to the Community than PM2.5.
6. Fiberglass insulation “fluff”, which survives the shredding of automobiles and refrigerators, was found over ½ mile away at the door steps to St. Josaphat, Oscar Mayer, Goddard and KinderCare schools.
7. And in the Category of “You Can’t Make This Sh!t Up” , many of us received an email yesterday from Commissioner Morita stating, “We will also work closely with the U.S. EPA to evaluate the results of the air monitoring GENERAL IRON WILL BE CONDUCTING, and will use that data to make informed decisions regarding the enforcement of city ordinances and rules intended to safeguard the health of our communities.”
REALLY Commissioner Morita? You're good w/GI being responsible for supplying the air quality data? You don't think that's tantamount to having the "wolf guarding the hen-house?"
