Sign to keep Greytown Main Street Safe
Why this petition matters
Greytown is a boutique heritage little town with a busy Main Street.
We have a thriving little town with a humbling family orientated community spirit.
This petition is to bring light to a potential change to our town which could impact the safety of our Main Street traffic, including emergency services and all those who utilise the pedestrian crossing at the south end of our main shopping area. I want to give you, our local community a voice in this matter and to make the South Wairarapa Council aware of the number of local residents opposed to this proposal.
A proposal has been put forth to the South Wairarapa District Council (June 22) by Woolworths New Zealand Ltd. ‘Proposed New Access to Existing Supermarket’. 134 Main Street now owned by Woolworths New Zealand, is set to be demolished to make way for a truck entrance to the existing super market.
If this development was to proceed:
1. Very large freight trucks will be turning in the proposed entrance from the North and must turn across oncoming traffic causing traffic congestion.
2. Will endanger all those who utilise the pedestrian crossing at the south end of our main shopping area and the public pedestrian access across from Stella Bull Park. This pedestrian crossing is used by the public, the elderly, and the majority of children who attend Greytown Primary / Kuranui High School / The Plunket Mothers, and the Greytown Pre-school.
3. Will impact the safety of our Main Street traffic, including all Ambulance / Fire and Police Emergency Services on call out.
4. Greytown will look to lose three more valuable car parks on Main Street.
5. A very large double sided illuminated sign will be erected that stands at minimum 5.3 meters in height making visibility for the pedestrian crossing even more challenging.
6. The construction and the heavy trucks driving over its roots will damage or kill the iconic 85 year old copper beech tree.

With the above said, we need your help to stop this and keep Greytown Main Street safe!
