Emily Pascual started this petition to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

Did you know there is a tax on sliced bread?

Yup. New York grabs an extra 8 cents to all "altered bagels." That means every time you get sliced, toasted, with a schmear of your favorite cream cheese or butter you are taxed. Even the classic Bacon, Egg, and Cheese is taxed!

As a born and raised New Yorker, this weird tax bothers me to no end! My ideal Sunday morning starts with a toasted everything bagel, topped with scallion cream cheese and two slices of tomato. If I had to guess, I've eaten over 1,000 bagels in my lifetime.

Why are we being punished for decking out our bagels with the all fixings?

"Cut bagels cross the line and become a prepared meal or food sold for on-premises consumption, which is taxable," -Carla Yrjanson, vice president of tax research and content for Thomson Reuters.

This signature breakfast item should be accessibly priced and not taxed. If you agree, support this petition! With wage stagnation, even an 8 cent tax on our beloved staple morning fuel is an affront to working people everywhere.

Join me in telling Governor Cuomo to repeal this tax on sliced bagels! We can change this law together.

New Yorkers already have one of the highest state and local income taxes in the country. Between income taxes, ordinary sales tax, and hidden implemented taxes in everyday spending, about 50 percent of New Yorkers’ paychecks is collected in taxes.
