Call a Coroner's Inquest in to Abdi's death

This petition had 1,608 supporters

On June 11, 2015, Abdurahman Ibrahim Hassan (Abdi), a 39 year old Somali refugee died in immigration detention custody at Peterborough Regional Hospital. The Canada Border Services Agency and the Special Investigations Unit have still not released his name, and no Coroner's Inquest has been called in to his death.

S.10 of the Coroner Coroners Act states that inquests must be held for deaths caused by unnatural means inside prisons. According to official press release Abdi died after being "restrained by officers". A Coroner's Inquest into Abdi's death is required and necessary; it's being unjustly delayed.

Abdi was a loving son who doted on his mother in Toronto and adored his little niece. He was the youngest of eight children, the baby of a family who had fled war-torn Somalia. He came to Canada on his own as a teenager from Mogadishu in 1993. He was declared a refugee in the mid-1990s but never became a permanent resident because of severe mental illness.

Abdi had been in immigration prison without charges, trial or date of release for three years at the time of his death in a maximum security prison in Lindsay, Ontario. Days after his death, 88 immigration detainees imprisoned at the same prison, the Central East Correction Centre, defied sanctions to issue a joint petition calling for an inquiry into their friend's death (read in full here). We at the End Immigration Detention Network have just been able to access to this petition. It reads:

* Coroner's inquest must happen and made public.
* Thorough inquest, must include talking to detainees.
* Implementation (of recommendations) from the inquest must be made immediately.
* The parties responsible must be made accountable.

Abdi's death is a travesty and a Coroner's Inquest in to his death is necessary and required. We are urging everyone who cares about truth and justice to add their name to this online petition to support the detainee's demands, and to ensure that the truth about Abdi's death is revealed.

Abdi is the 12th person to have died in immigration detention custody since 2000. We cannot allow people this to continue.

Sign this petition and share with your friends. Let's work together to end the deaths.
