Dear Friend of the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre,
Thank you for joining more than 2150 concerned citizens who have signed the petition urging the board of the American Cinematheque to hold a public meeting, explain the problems facing the troubled non-profit, halt any potential sale of the Egyptian Theatre and be transparent about its plans moving forward. The petition is directed to the board, to the local city councilmember's office, and to the California Attorney General, who was already investigating the American Cinematheque before it sought to sell the theatre.
We’re pleased to share with you a televised news report about this petition, which aired earlier this week. To save the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre, we cast a buddy picture, starring our Richard Schave and his beloved Crossroads School film teacher Jim Hosney, a legend in this town. Spectrum News 1's Tara Lynn Wagner followed them down Hollywood Boulevard to visit the threatened landmark, talk about why it matters, and demand TRANSPARENCY NOW from the American Cinematheque board of directors.
Although hundreds of people have signed the petition, and a number of journalists have asked the American Cinematheque board for comment, the board has made no public statement about the problems with the non-profit or their plans to sell the theater. We’re not even sure that the petition comments, which are automatically sent to the non-profit’s posted email address, are being shared with all the board members.
So on Tuesday morning at 10am, we’re planning to go to Los Angeles City Hall to give public comment, and ask Hollywood Councilman Mitch O’Farrell (who is a recipient of the petition comments, along with the California Attorney General) to step in and get some answers for the community. If you’re anywhere near Downtown L.A., please join us!
You can find a Facebook event with all the information, including suggested talking points, here. If you're planning to attend, RSVP and let us know if you've got questions.
If you can’t be there, you can help get the word out by sharing the Facebook event or this Tweet.
Please continue to share the petition with friends who love the American Cinematheque and want to see it thrive in the historic Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. And stay tuned for additional news as we have it.
Yours for Los Angeles,
Kim Cooper & Richard Schave
