Dear Friend of the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre,

Thank you for joining more than 2200 concerned citizens who have signed the petition urging the board of the American Cinematheque to hold a public meeting, explain the problems facing the troubled non-profit, halt any potential sale of the Egyptian Theatre and be transparent about its plans moving forward. The petition is directed to the board, to the local city councilmember's office, and to the California Attorney General, who was already investigating the American Cinematheque before it sought to sell the theatre.

We’re pleased to share a feature story that appeared in this week’s Hollywood Reporter, about concerns about this threat to a community treasure: "Will Netflix's Ownership of L.A.'s Egyptian Theatre Spark Backlash?"

With no response from the American Cinematheque board and no certainty that board members are even receiving the petition comments emailed to their attention, we’re turning to the city, which sold the theater to the non-profit for the symbolic price of $1 and has a responsibility to to the community to make sure that gift is being properly managed.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 10am, we’ll be at Los Angeles City Hall to enter the petition into the record and give public comment, asking Councilman Mitch O’Farrell to step in and get some answers for the community. If you’re anywhere near Downtown L.A., please join us!

You can find a Facebook event with all the information, including suggested talking points, at the link below:

If you can’t be there, you can help get the word out by sharing the Facebook event or this Tweet. If you don't use Facebook and want to give public comment, email us for that information.

Please continue to share the petition with friends who love the American Cinematheque and want to see it thrive in the historic Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. And stay tuned for additional news as we have it.

Yours for Los Angeles,
Kim Cooper & Richard Schave
