Yesterday, Cumberland County Schools Superintendent Frank Till Jr. alerted staff, parents and families of students who attend year-round schools that there is a possibility we may have to switch to traditional calendar. A provision tucked away in a Senate budget proposal would effectively do away with year-round schools like Reid Ross Classical Middle and High School, Anne Chesnutt Middle School and E.E. Miller Elementary School as of July 1, 2016.
As the parent, family member or care taker of a student enrolled in the Cumberland County School System, we were given the option to send our children to a school of choice. And for our own reasons, we decided on year-round calendar schools like Reid Ross Classical Middle and High School, Anne Chesnutt Middle School and E.E. Miller Elementary School. I find it quite disheartening to find out that these politicians feel they have the power to take away our right to choose being part of a year-round school calendar.
9 years ago I decided to send my daughter to Reid Ross Classical Middle School not only because of what Reid Ross had to offer her academically, but also because of the year-round schedule. Since then I’ve had two children graduate from Reid Ross and my son is a rising sophomore. We’ve adapted to the year-round calendar schedule and I’m sure many of you feel the same.
This petition is to let our representatives know it is not okay to force our hand and take away our freedom in choosing to be part of a year-round calendar.
