Demand Importation of European Baby Formula Now!

We’re currently in the middle of a nationwide baby formula shortage. Panicked parents are scrambling to find formula on shelves, reselling baby formula on marketplaces like Facebook and Craigslist, and even resorting to making their own formula in their homes. 

There are only a handful of companies that control the majority of baby formula production in the USA. Years of successful lobbying of the FDA and limiting the importing of baby formula from overseas – using FDA labeling and clinical trial requirements - blocked out any foreign competitors. Ironically, the European formulas are safer and healthier for our babies.

As of May 17th, the only company authorized to import from Europe is Nestle. Demand Better!

In the last 3 days, a small team of entrepreneurs have lined up:

• Multiple European baby formula producers with capacity to ship greater than 200,000 cans of formula immediately and rapidly ramp up to meet the total demand in the US with preferred pricing.
• Funding to procure as much formula as needed to order from overseas
• Shipping and logistics partners to get this formula from overseas to the United States
• 3PL (3rd party logistic partners) able to warehouse, ship, and deliver formula to the front doorsteps of Americans
• A team of developers able to build an e-commerce website to enable the purchasing and ordering of baby formula
• Supply chain to Big Box stores for mass distribution

Here’s how you can help:

Sign this petition and join us in asking the FDA and the US Government to lift the ban on importing baby formula from overseas by issuing an EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) on Europes leading baby formula brands.

The Biden administration recently alluded to “importing” as a means to help relieve our supply constraints, but we do not believe the government is moving quick enough to meet the demands of desperate parents.  In the petition, we ask how much baby formula you need immediately. If you are not a parent, nbd, if you are a parent, this will help us gauge the amount of formula we should expect to order immediately, and predict on a weekly basis how much is continually needed until this is over. 

Here’s our 3-step plan:
Petition the FDA to either temporarily lift their ban, or provide Emergency Use Authorization, to import baby formula from Europe to sell commercially. We will maintain English versions of formula labels on our website and offer a recall notification service via SMS and email in the event of any recalls.

Purchase >200k+ cans of formula immediately, work with our logistics partner to fly these overseas, and deliver them to a warehouse managed by our domestic 3PL.

Launch an e-commerce website that enables consumers to purchase this formula and have it delivered at their doorsteps within 2-3 days

Transparent Economics
We are concerned parents who recognize a crisis and fortunately have the means and resources to help fix it. We do not intend to profiteer off of this.

We plan to add up to a 20% markup to our landed cost, to cover operational overhead, lost/damaged expenses, and legal fees. Landed costs may include:

• Cost per can
• International freight shipping
• 3PL partner fee
• Domestic shipping
• Legal fees

Here’s an example: Let’s say a 400g can of formula costs $5.00, international shipping is $2, 3PL fee w/shipping is $12, our landed cost is $17.00. With a 20% markup, we would sell this can for $20.40. This is only an example and does not reflect actual pricing.

Once supplies normalize and we no longer need to continue this operation, we will calculate our net profits and donate 50% to Feeding America, an organization that provides support to families who need access to baby food and formula. 

Our goal is clear.

Unblock governmental restrictions on the importation of quality baby formula from Europe, help families in severe distress in finding baby formula, and provide quality choices of formula in doing so.

The initiative is led by Reuben Katz and Alex Cohen, two startup entrepreneurs who saw the baby food crises and shared in the immediacy to do something about it. They united, brought in their teams and resources, and launched the initiative.

Alex Cohen is based in Austin, TX and leads consumer product at Carbon Health, a fast growing healthcare startup in the US. Before that, he started two companies (one acquired) and has been running product teams for nearly a decade.
