We, the undersigned, call on the United Nations to take immediate action against the growing threat of foreign interference in democratic elections facilitated by tech platforms owned by billionaires like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and other oligarchs. These platforms X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and others have become powerful tools for spreading disinformation, hate speech, and psychological manipulation, undermining democracy worldwide.

 

The unchecked influence of these individuals and their platforms allows:

Disinformation campaigns to spread without accountability, destabilizing democratic processes.

Foreign interference in elections, including algorithmic manipulation and unregulated political advertising.

Amplification of hate speech and extremist ideologies that divide societies and threaten human rights.

 

This issue is not limited to any one nation, it is a global crisis that endangers the principles of democracy everywhere. Platforms like X, Facebook, and others have been linked to political manipulation and unrest across numerous countries, from the United States to developing nations. Without proper oversight, these corporations will continue to exploit their influence for profit at the expense of free and fair elections.

 

We urge the United Nations to:

1. Establish global guidelines to regulate social media platforms, ensuring transparency in their algorithms and content moderation.

2. Hold platform owners accountable for enabling disinformation, hate speech, and electoral manipulation.

3. Investigate foreign interference in democratic elections facilitated by these platforms.

4. Protect vulnerable nations from being exploited by the unchecked power of tech oligarchs.

 

Democracy cannot survive if we allow corporations and billionaires to undermine its foundations. We need global leadership to expose and address this growing threat before it erodes trust in democratic institutions and human rights further.
