On Monday 10/27/25 the Architectural Board of Review granted Final Design Approval, the only stipulation being that the material used for a set of gates be wrought iron rather than the cheaper alternative.

Regarding a "Better Aquatics Center" for Ortega Park, it appears that we got what we wanted:

1) The Ortega Park plan to be revised now, before it is too late,

2) An easily accessible aquatic sports facility for recreation, exercise, skill development, physical therapy, competition, water polo and other activities for all ages and abilities,

3) Aquatic sports facilities that meet the industry standard, that include at least a 25 yard competition pool, and a children’s water play area

3) The City to prioritize the construction of the aquatic sports facilities, before construction of the other park elements.

While the timing of construction remains to be seen, verbiage on construction documents previously made available to the public indicates that the pool will be constructed before the skate park and basketball courts due to construction logistics. Also, the contaminated soil on this block will need to be remediated prior to construction of anything. This is expected to take a while.

Finally, when all is said and done, I anticipate an aquatic center that can offer a wide range of activities to all community members, provide greater aquatic sports access to  those who have not had access, allow for simultaneous programming to keep the center economically viable and able to serve more user groups, and to be open year round!

Kudos to the SB Aquatics Coalition - 💪a force to be reckoned with  -  and all the generous support from our community. We couldn't have achieved this without you!

We have reason to celebrate.. Now let's hope that this project is completed asap!!
