Hundreds of whales and dolphins could be severely injured if the U.S. Air Force goes forward with a plan to test bombs off the coast of Kauai without taking the proper steps to protect marine mammals.
The Air Force has asked the National Marine Fisheries Service for permission to test 100 bombs a year for the next five years. During this time, they believe that up to 637 whales and dolphins could be harmed.
The Air Force predicts that dozens of whales and dolphins will permanently lose their hearing, and hundreds more animals could suffer temporary hearing loss. Because these marine mammals rely on sound for everything from hunting to communication, losing their hearing would be disastrous for them -- or possibly fatal. In some documented cases, of traumatized and deafened whales and dolphins have literally beached themselves, leading to horrific deaths.
The Air Force says they plan to look for marine mammals on the surface of the ocean before they drop their bombs. But this strategy won’t work for the animals that reside in the deep waters off the coast of Hawaii. There will be many whales and dolphins that suffer because the military is only performing a perfunctory search for them.
The National Marine Fisheries Service should not allow the Air Force to test their bombs until they come up with a better plan to keep marine mammals out of harm’s way. Sign this petition to urge the NMFS to reject the Air Force’s plan to drop bombs on innocent whales and dolphins.
