The Minnesota Zoo is in danger of closing due to lack of revenue for months, from COVID -19. Unlike the MN State Fair which will hopefully re-open next year, once the zoo closes,  the State of MN will likely never see it return. The money invested in all of the recent upgrades, such as the new bird habitats which have never opened, will be lost and it will cost millions just to close the zoo doors. Relocating the animals will be costly and traumatic to endangered species and a number will likely not survive the transition. The zoo will sit in Apple Valley, empty buildings and enclosures, for decades. It seems that with careful planning such as reservations, limited guests allowed into an exhibit at a time, extended cleaning, roping off windows where little hands and noses might spread germs, increased supervision at exhibits etc. there is no reason guests cannot safely enjoy almost all areas of the zoo, and start bringing in desperately needed revenue. In the midst of all the ugliness of this year let’s not permanently lose a healing place that has brought happiness to our state for so many years.
Along with signing this petition please make others aware of the situation and contact your state representatives and Governor Walz to express your wishes. This is time sensitive as the legislature is making decisions now which will affect the fate of the zoo. In the meantime please donate or purchase memberships or fund raising event tickets. https://www.classy.org/campaign/hope-for-tomorrow/c279425
