I am Rose Previte, an owner of Compass Rose, a neighborhood tavern to open at 1346 T St., N.W. in Washington, DC. Our menu is focused on international street food-think kabobs, baked pies and Georgian cheese bread. Compass Rose will be a place for neighbors to come together and feel at home. We want people to make friends, share their troubles and toast their victories with us. We believe all joys and sorrows are best shared over drinks and some delicious food. The atmosphere will be casual and cozy -- we're opening in a quaint estimated 1,200 square foot space on T Street (right next to St Ex and directly across the street from the new Matchbox). They say the best things come in small packages, and we hope that's what you'll find when we open.
But first: we need a liquor license!
We have been out in the community meeting our neighbors. We want to work with the residents of ANC 1B to be a great addition to T street. We have been negotiating with our protesters (the same people trying to impose a liquor license moratorium to sections of multiple DC neighborhoods) and hope to sign a neighborhood agreement that makes everyone happy!
We have already made a lot of changes to our liquor license application based on requests by the neighbors-we have shown our commitment to being good neighbors!
We need you to tell our ANC that there a lot of people in DC that want to encourage small businesses and help them succeed!
As many of you are likely familiar, DC's liquor laws make it possible for only a couple of people to try and stop you from opening your business or easily delay your opening by at least four months! We are in the midst of a conflict over our license and we need to show our local ANC (neighborhood commission) that the voices of protest do not necessarily represent the community at large. We have come a long way in the license process and are in the "negotiating" stage. We are trying very hard to create a voluntary "settlement" agreement with our protesters and our local ANC to address all concerns about noise, crowds and parking.
We are not asking for a variance. We are zoned for commercial use and are located steps from other businesses very similar to ours-both next door and directly across the street. We are only looking to abide by rules similar to our neighbors so that all the bars and restaurants can be on a level playing field. We have been working with our protesters over the last couple of weeks and have already agreed to a number of changes to our initial application after better understanding neighbor concerns and like-business operations. We want to ensure that Compass Rose fits well in our neighborhood. To list just a few, we have agreed to close our front patio at the same time other businesses around us are required to close their patios. We have agreed not to play music or have live entertainment outside. We have assured our neighbors that we will do everything possible to minimize noise and additional traffic on T Street. We have agreed to always have available contact info for an owner and manager who can deal with any neighbor’s concerns real time.
We take our responsibility to our community very seriously. Months before any protests were filed, we were knocking on our neighbor’s doors trying to meet people and to become part of the community. We have attended a number of community meetings to introduce ourselves to the neighborhood in the hopes of getting to know the people on our street and in all of ANC 1B. We have met many people very excited for our business to come to T street! Though sadly, it’s often only the voices of the dissenters who are loudest—we think that’s the case here. We have already spoken with commissioners on our ANC who support us and the draft neighborhood agreement we have created.
The purpose of this petition is to show the commissioners and community that the neighborhood supports us as well!
If you like our concept and believe that Washington should be a welcoming environment for small businesses, please consider signing this petition. We really appreciate it.
The ANC will be interested in how close you live to our new business, so if you don't mind, please add your address or perhaps just the closest cross streets. This will make our petition more effective.
Thank you so much for your time! We truly appreciate your support and cannot wait to welcome you to Compass Rose!
