Petition to Install Sidewalks on West Clarkstown Road for Public Safety
 

We, the residents of West Clarkstown and the surrounding community, are calling on our elected officials to address a critical safety issue along West Clarkstown Road between New Clarkstown Road and North Middletown Road.

This is a heavily traveled route, yet it has no sidewalks and no shoulder, forcing pedestrians — including families with young children, individuals pushing strollers, students, and daily walkers — to share the narrow roadway with fast-moving traffic.

This is not just an inconvenience — it’s a daily danger.

Over the past months, we’ve heard from many neighbors expressing how unsafe this situation feels:

• One neighbor shared that he stopped exercising because he’s too afraid to walk along the road.
• Several others have said they avoid walking altogether, especially after dark, because there’s simply nowhere safe to step aside when cars pass.
• And nearly every driver who uses this road regularly has had a close call, needing to swerve or slow down suddenly to avoid a pedestrian walking along the edge — at any hour of the day or night.
   

We should not have to live with this constant risk.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 17% of all traffic fatalities in 2019 were pedestrians. Our community should not have to wait for a tragedy before seeing change.

We are urgently requesting that the Town of Clarkstown and Rockland County work together to prioritize the installation of sidewalks along this stretch of road. Doing so will:

• Protect lives by providing a safe walking space
• Encourage walkability and healthier lifestyles
• Foster stronger community connections
• Enhance the safety and livability of our neighborhood
