“Sidewalks Are Essential – Don’t Cut Off Our Community”

“Sidewalks Are Essential – Don’t Cut Off Our Community”
The Issue
The Centennial Bridge is more than a piece of infrastructure. It’s part of Miramichi’s story. It connects us—not just cars and trucks—but people. Seniors walking to get groceries. Students crossing to get to school. Workers on foot heading to shifts. Families walking for fresh air. We walk this bridge because we need to, and because it’s ours.
But the newly announced rehabilitation plans for the Centennial Bridge don’t include a sidewalk.
Let that sink in.
No sidewalk. No pedestrian access. Nothing for the people who use it every single day without a vehicle.
This is not just an oversight. It’s a disconnect. And it sends the wrong message—that if you don’t drive, you don’t matter.
We’re calling on the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure to reconsider these plans. We’re demanding that a sidewalk be included in the Centennial Bridge project—because Miramichi deserves better. Our community deserves a bridge that works for everyone.
This isn’t a want. This is a need.
We love this bridge. It’s in every photo of our city. It’s iconic. But if it doesn't serve the people who walk it—it’s just a symbol with no soul.
We walk here. And we’re not backing down.
