SIDE WALKS ON COOK RD [NEAR HILLSIDE HIGH SCHOOL]

SIDE WALKS ON COOK RD [NEAR HILLSIDE HIGH SCHOOL]
The Issue
Having lived on Cook Rd near Hillside High School, in Durham, North Carolina, for many decades, I am alarmed by the persistent lack of proper sidewalks and curbs in this neighborhood. My family has owned property on Cook Rd for close to 80 years, and we, along with many longstanding taxpayers, find it frustrating that promises for improvements have gone unfulfilled.
In 2024, Durham voters approved a monumental $200 million bond aimed at improving our streets, sidewalks, and parks. Yet, Cook Rd remains neglected and hazardous for pedestrians. Without sidewalks, children from Hillside High School, along with other pedestrians, are at risk every day as they navigate around traffic with no safe passageway.
The installation of sidewalks and curbs on Cook Rd is not just about aesthetics; it is about safety, accessibility, and equity for all residents. It will provide children with a safe route to school, encourage healthful activities such as walking and jogging, and potentially reduce vehicular traffic congestion.
By prioritizing Cook Rd for the rollout of these improvements, the City of Durham will demonstrate its commitment to honoring the voices of longtime residents and to promoting a safer, more connected neighborhood. It's time to take action and ensure that Cook Rd receives the attention that the community deserves.
Please join me in calling on city officials to allocate resources towards the installation of sidewalks and curbs on Cook Rd. Sign this petition to demand action and improve the quality of life in our neighborhood.
