Shut Down Tregembo Animal Park and Rescue the Animals

Shut Down Tregembo Animal Park and Rescue the Animals
The Issue
Tregembo Animal Park in Wilmington, North Carolina, has been under scrutiny for over 20 years. Visitors and eyewitnesses have repeatedly documented filthy conditions, distressed animals, and shocking neglect. This roadside zoo has long been considered one of the worst in the country, yet it remains open.
Reports from the property have included:
- Cramped and unsanitary cages
- Algae-filled water receptacles
- Animals suffering from untreated injuries and illness
- Visible signs of psychological distress, including repetitive pacing and abnormal behavior
- Dead and decaying animals found on site
Video footage has shown a limping monkey, a fox and donkey with hair loss, and a bobcat struggling to move. Many of these animals are held in barren cages, without proper veterinary care or enrichment.
In 2017, two North Carolina residents filed a lawsuit alleging that the zoo’s treatment of bears Ben and Booger violated the state’s anti-cruelty law. Thanks to their efforts, both bears were rescued and relocated to an accredited sanctuary. But the suffering continues for the animals still trapped there.
We are calling on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to:
- Revoke Tregembo Animal Park’s exhibitor license
- Shut down the facility permanently
- Relocate all surviving animals to accredited sanctuaries
Animals deserve more than cages, concrete, and chronic neglect. North Carolina should not tolerate a facility that profits from cruelty and refuses to modernize its practices. A zoo should be a place of learning, compassion, and conservation, not suffering.
Sign this petition if you believe it is time to shut down Tregembo Animal Park for good and give its animals the freedom, space, and care they deserve.
